Whether your style is super trendy or simply classic, every bride can find inspiration from the gowns striding down the catwalk at spring 2017 bridal fashion week.
“Delicate feminine lines, broken up with softly tied oversized bows, cascading three dimensional flowers suspended on translucent canvases of organza and tulle — accented by deeply plunging necklines — and flowing feather edged cape-lets and detachable billowing skirts are all in the mix for 2017,” says Jane Elmer, owner of Elmer Couture in the United Kingdom.
Here’s a closer look at a few of this year’s biggest trends.
Bring on the Bows
Nothing says you’re celebrating big like an oversized bow. So lady-like and attention-grabbing, your guests won’t keep their eyes off you.
Today’s bride is bowing it up on the front, side, and back of her dress for extra impact.
“Bows are a great way to add volume or texture to a minimalistic gown. Depending on the style, they can add femininity or give a dress modern flare,” says Ashley Patyk, owner of Magnolia Bridal in Saint Charles, Ill.
Add 3-D Flare
Looking for real pop? Three-dimensional embellishments in the form of blooms and lace may do the trick.
“3-D florals or appliques create texture that gives a unique and truly romantic look,” says Patyk.
Dare to Bare
If you don’t do buttoned-up there are lots of gowns that show off a little extra skin. Many big-name designers, including Oscar de la Renta and Lela Rose, are showing gowns with just the right amount of sex appeal, perfect for brides looking to make a statement.
“Off the shoulder silhouettes and deep V-necks can be stunningly elegant, but be sure it’s something you’ll be comfortable in all day,” says Patyk.
Go Bold with Color
While white is still classic, sticking to it isn’t a must.
Colorful bridal gowns everywhere this season, especially in soft pastel hues like Pantone’s 2016 colors of the year, Rose Quartz and Serenity. Mira Zwillinger, Romona Keveza, Naeem Khan and Hayley Paige are showing blush-hued gowns with a romantic feel while Monique Lhuillier, Angel Sanchez, J.Mendel and Jenny Packham are going for the pale blue look.
Tap Into Toppers
Want to draw guests’ eyes to the top of your frame? Designers have the perfect solution: toppers. From capelets and bomber jackets to boleros and ponchos, wedding gowns this season are taking some of the “wow” away from the train and bringing it to the top of the dress.
Change Into a Second Dress
Can’t choose just one dress? No problem! Simply change into a second gown at the reception. Many bridesmaid dresses actually feature the same trends popular in wedding gowns like plunging v-necks, open backs, lace, slimmer silhouettes and fitted trumpet skirts, meaning you don’t have to sacrifice style or bust your budget.
“Plus, with all the sequins and sparkle we’re seeing in bridesmaids dresses, they can also be worn for other wedding-related events, such as engagement parties or rehearsal dinner,” says Vivian Dessy, owner of the Dessy Group.
