Up or Down?

It’s the age-old wedding hair question. Up or down?

Unless you have a pixie cut or short, close-cropped hair, you’re more than likely going to be asking yourself this very question come your big day.

Whether you should go with an up-do or let it all down can depend on a lot – your hair length, what you feel more comfortable in, the weather (pulling your hair back can be great for hot, sticky summers) and let’s not forget, the style of the wedding dress you’ll be wearing.

When it comes to deciding on whether to go up or down, Jen Spair, hairstylist at Hair by Spair, Nashville, Tenn., says that luckily, most hairstyles out there will complement nearly any bridal dress neckline, making it easier for brides to wear their hair how they’re most comfortable.

Generally, she says, high necklines work best with high up-dos.

Fitting in with the trendy boho chic wedding theme is the trend of the floral crown, which Spair says has been all the rage both in 2017 and in the current 2018 wedding season. Hair down with loose curls and a flower crown placement or a half up-half down look with loose braids accented with flowers or diamond clips are just some of the more trendy looks this year, she says.

L’Oreal Paris agrees, highlighting three wedding up-dos that are on trend in 2018 as the simple up-do with crown braiding, the simple chignon (side bun) accented with a braid, and a voluminous high bun.

Spair’s personal favorite for a classic hairstyle that works regardless of dress shapes or necklines is that simple loose bun placed right at the bride’s lower neck.

To find the best wedding hairstyle for your big day, most stylists agree it’s important to start with a hair trial. There you can bring in pictures of your dress, hairstyles you like, and consult with your stylist about the full wedding day look.

Though it’s not typically feasible to be in the actual wedding dress during your trial, brides can try their best to mimic their look by wearing something with a similar neckline (pull out that deep V-neck tee if you’ve chosen a low-cut dress or wear a tank for a sleeveless gown). Also consider your entire look, including any jewelry you see yourself with – wearing your long hair down might as well negate your vision of having a statement necklace.
