It’s December, which means it is officially engagement season! In fact, according to the WeddingWire’s 2019 Newlywed Report, seven of the 10 most popular days to get engaged are in December.
So, if you, like many other Americans, are planning to pop the question this month, here are some answers to frequently asked questions about engagement etiquette.
What’s the difference between an engagement ring and a wedding band?
Traditionally, an engagement ring features a single larger stone, sometimes surrounded by other gems, and is given as part of the proposal. A wedding band is given during the wedding ceremony and is typically a much simpler design.
How much should I spend on an engagement ring?
While you may have heard that you should spend two or three months’ salary on an engagement ring – that’s purely marketing. It’s less about what you should pay, and more about what you can afford and what your partner is comfortable. For reference, Americans spent an average of $5,000 on an engagement ring in 2019, but that can vary greatly depending on the market.

Again, the answer to this question depends entirely on the couple. Many proposals (31 percent) take place at home, according to WeddingWire. However, if you’re looking for a more public spot, iconic landmarks are popular choices. According to a study of Instagram posts, the top three most common places to get down on one knee are Central Park, the Eiffel Tower and the Brooklyn Bridge.
What happens if I don’t like the ring?
This is a tough spot. If your partner went ring shopping solo, they knowingly took a risk that it might not be your dream ring. Before you start listing all the things you don’t like (or outright hate) about the ring, take a couple of days to see if it grows on you.
