Big Wedding on Campus: St. Ignatius Church at the University of San Francisco

Wedding Style >

School’s out, but summer is a great time to get back to campus. After all, that’s where some of the most beautiful chapels are located, and they make for gorgeous wedding ceremonies. As we move into wedding season — 17 percent of weddings take place in June, the most popular month — we’re taking a look at some of the top on-campus chapels and churches to tie the knot.

St. Ignatius Church — The University of San Francisco, San Francisco

Students at the University of San Francisco come to the Saint Ignatius Church not only in prayer, but also to begin and end their college experience. Both the new-student convocation and the graduation ceremonies are held at the church. However, although the church is located on the university’s campus, it is an independent Jesuit parish that serves as a landmark for the whole city of San Francisco.

The first St. Ignatius Church was a simple wooden structure dedicated in 1855. Currently, the church stands in the Jesuit Baroque style with large columns and pillars. The most recent version, the fifth St. Ignatius Church, was dedicated in 1914.

To be married at the church, you need only to have been an active parishioner of St. Ignatius Church for at least six months before requesting a wedding date. You will also qualify if you are an alumnus/a of the university, or have a Jesuit priest who will perform the ceremony. Wedding preparation must begin at least six months prior to the wedding date. St. Ignatius has compiled a wedding booklet of their wedding policies, produces and guidelines that should ease the stress on brides-to-be at least a little. The cost of the church for a wedding: $1,925 with $1,000 non-refundable deposit
