The Most Awesome Hartford Whalers-Themed Wedding You?ll Ever See

Social Media & Weddings >

The National Hockey League currently is in the midst of the Stanley Cup Finals, but the Hartford Whalers are nowhere to be seen.

Not just in the Finals but in the NHL, in general.

The franchise — which in 1972 was formed as the Boston-based New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association, moved to Hartford in ’74 and joined as the NHL as the Hartford Whalers in ’79 — relocated from Connecticut to Greensboro, N.C., in 1997 and became the Carolina Hurricanes.

But like distance, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

For their March 30, 2013, wedding in Gardner, Mass., Kate Murphy and Sean Dwyer paid the ultimate Hartford homage to The Whale.

The invitations were hockey-game tickets. The bride had a Whalers logo patch on her dress’s train; the groom also wore the patch on the back of the jacket of his kelly green tuxedo. Groomsmen wore Whalers sweaters. Pucky the Whale, the team’s mascot, escorted Kate to center ice of a hockey rink (naturally), where they said their vows. After Sean kissed his bride, he then lifted up a replica Stanley Cup in celebration.
