The 1897 Daimler Wagonette: The First Wedding Car?
The 1897 Daimler Wagonette featured just a two-cylinder, 6.5 horsepower engine that topped out at 11 mph, but it probably worked just fine for the James Andrews and Rosa Gough’s 1903 wedding.
The Haynes Motor Museum in Yeovil, Somerset, England, recently received the ride as a donation from the nearby Bristol Museum, and upon researching the car’s history uncovered the photo showing it being used in the 1903 Andrews/Gough wedding in Weston-Super-Mare, Ms. Gough’s hometown.
According to local records and census information, the pair soon emigrated to New Zealand following the wedding. Mike Penn, the motor museum’s curatorial director, tracked down a surviving relative of the couple in New Zealand, who provided the museum with a copy of the original photograph, which is believed to be the first documented used of a wedding car.
