Bride Breaks Elbow Minutes Before Wedding, Still Makes It Through Ceremony

It was almost the best of times, then it was the worst of times.

Bride-to-be Janet Harris, 66, was set to marry her love Lester Perzanowski, 66, at the Holly Hotel in Holly, Mich., on Sept. 14, but when she began descending a staircase at the venue she tumbled down the stair, breaking her elbow in the process.

But the show, as it always does, went on. (Nearly three dozen out-of-town guests already had arrived.)

The pair, from Livonia, Mich., went through a shortened ceremony — Janet sat rather than stand — before paramedics treated her and took her in an ambulance to a nearby medical center.

Her new husband and the guests, however, continued onto the reception.

“It’s a shame that I wasn’t there. That’s probably the worst part of it,” she told the Detroit Free Press. “I guess the best part of it is I am married in God’s eyes now.”

After a hospital transfer and surgery last week to replace her elbow with a new artificial one, Janet is now at home recuperating under the care of her new husband.

“I’m taking care of her,” Perzanowski said. “That’s my job.”
